Forster CO-AX reloading press: REVIEW- Is it the best press for precision rifle?

reloading press review

I’ve been loading ammunition since I single wohnung linz urfahr was a teenager in the early-90s.  My first press was a Dillon 650 and that is what I learned to uni mannheim exam dates load pistol cartridges on.  The 650 worked well when it was set up and not exploding (I blew up the primer feed twice but that is a story for another time) but it was quite the project when switching calibers.

When I drifted into rifle reloading someone gave me a single stage.  I loved that thing.  Compared to single burger milano recensioni the engineering project required to switch cartridges on the 650, simply swapping out shell holders and screwing single wohnung linz urfahr down dies was liberating.  This was especially helpful when I worked in a retail gun shop whose owner refused to pay me in cash.  Every-time I accrued enough money, I took home another used hunting rifle.  I’d load for it until I got it to shoot under a minute, then I sold it and started the cycle again.  This meant I was likely loading for 4 or 5 different cartridges at any given time and might be heading to the range with an esoteric assortment like 6mm Remington, 280 Remington, 7 STW and 375 H&H.  At the time, it seemed better than cash and when I look back, I learned a lot (this is what actually prompted the launch of this site the first time around in the late 90s when we had more of a hunting focus).

Fast forward in the twenty some odd years and I now load more than ever.  A few times a week I’m loading a variety of bullets for a number of different cartridges.   I now own two presses, a Dillon 550 (IF a primer blows, you don’t have all the primers go like on a 650) for pistol and a.   I’ve been using the for the past ten years or so and believe me, I wish I had started earlier.

The differs from most single stage presses in two areas, the shell holder and die insert arrangement.  Unlike my old Rock Chucker, you don’t need to invest in a series of different shell holders to work with cartridges; the reversible jaws simply open and close on most common cases without adjustment (Forster does make extra jaws for oddball cartridges).  Dies simply slide in and out of a notch in the front of a Forster press.  No more screwing anything down to ensure your settings stay the same; simply lock the die’s lock ring around its body, adjust the die and every time you take it in and out of the press, its setting stays exactly the same.  This is my favorite part of the!

An upside to the way the shell holder and die arrangement works is the cartridge is allowed to float into the die decreasing the likelihood something isn’t aligned and potentially causing accuracy-killing run out ( actually offers a floating die head option for Dillon progressive presses to achieve the same result).  When I do check for run out, my results are spectacular.  Note: that is a 300 grain being seated into a with a.

For decapping and resizing operations, the has a small jar attached to a tube to retain the spent primers.  It is a neat system that hasn’t failed me in thousands and thousands of rounds.  On the top of the press is a little priming system I don’t often use.  I prime cases with a Sinclair hand priming tool and only use it in instances when I encounter something I don’t have a shell holder for.

As far as the downsides to the, perhaps the biggest is the shell holder plate design.  When you need to remove it to switch around the jaws, the little die springs inside the holder will often fly out.  Also, with extensive use, the plate may start to bend.  To address this, offers a custom made shell plate holder that retains the springs, it is worth buying for the this reason alone ().

I’ll often run which are fairly tall in my and they function without a hitch. The needed the handle ground down in order to clear the handle assembly of the Co-Ax, but that works fine now.

makes a  I shot them an email and they sent me a sample.  Can you say game changer?  As much as I liked the Co-Ax the way it came from the factory, these two parts made it even better.   enhance visibility for loading operations and the is worth its weight in gold.  Solid products for a solid press.

I had sticker shock when I bought my.  It is pricier than many other  (almost twice as much as a ); however, I think it is well worth the investment.  In my opinion, this is a great press for the precision rifle shooter.   Who doesn’t want concentric rounds and easy, repeatable die swaps?

Whenever someone asks me for advice on rifle loading equipment I always recommend the and then tell them that they can thank me later.

Cleaning Method

Choosing the correct cleaning method is based on personal preference with regards to noise, price, longevity, and the finish that can be accomplished on the brass case. The pros and cons are as follows:

Vibratory Tumbler: PRO- Less expensive, CON- Noisy and requires more time investment during the cleaning process.

Sonic Cleaner: PRO- Very quiet and time effective, CON- Leaves a dull finish on the brass

Wet Rotary Tumbler: PRO- Very fast, effective and leaves the brass extremely clean, CON- Expensive

Cleaning Media

The cleaning media that you will use is dependant on the cleaning method used and is as follows:

Vibratory Tumbler: Corncob or Walnut media (treated includes an oil penetrative solution that may help the cases to become less dull when cleaned)

Sonic Cleaner: Case cleaning solution (dilutes with water)

Wet Rotary Tumbler: Stainless steel pins (mixed with water or case cleaning solution)

Powder Measure

A powder measure is not nescessary however it does make the reloading process much simpler, and less time consuming. This item is used to fill the powder scales to a required charge, and then topped up using the powder dribbler.

A description of the Hornady L-N-L Powder Measure can be found below: single hard returns to separate paragraphs

'The Lock-N-Load® powder measure offers the most flexible operation and the widest range of any powder measure. It ranges from.5 - 265 grains of powder (special metering inserts and rotor required). Metering inserts can be changed with the push of a button. Comes with standard rotor and metering insert.

Features

LARGEST CHARGE RANGE IN THE INDUSTRY

Go from.5 grain to 265 grains by simply changing rotor and inserts. Use one Lock-N-Load® Powder Measure for reloading everything from small pistol cartridges to large magnum rifle cartridges.

PUSH BUTTON RELEASE FUNCTION

To change metering inserts, just push the Lock-N-Load® insert release button and insert another metering insert. Simply verify the new charge and you're reloading again right away. Inserts can be swapped in seconds. Go from reloading 30-06 to 45 Auto in no time. Keep the preset inserts with your die sets.

PRECISION TOLERANCE

With only.002" clearance between the drum and rotor, it's the tightest in the industry for a standard measure. This tight tolerance helps eliminate powder binding between the frame and drum, delivering smooth function with all types of propellant–extruded or ball.

MULTIPLE MOUNTING METHODS

Mount to your bench using a standard mounting bracket and lock ring, or use our Lock-N-Load® bushings to mount this versatile measure on the Fast Load Powder Measure Stand or on the Lock-N-Load® AP™ with case activated powder drop for automatic powder measuring during reloading.

ADJUSTABLE TENSION

The O-ring on the metering insert adjustment lets you put a slight amount of tension on the metering unit to make fine, incremental adjustments. Once you've set your charge, tighten the lock ring to secure the setting.

SMALL & LARGER DROP TUBES

These tubes speed up powder flow. Two drop tubes are provided standard for.204 to 45 calibRE loads. Use the largest drop tube that fits the case mouth. An optional extended drop tube is also available.'

Scales

Possibly the most important part of reloading are the powder scales as this is what allows for accuracy when weighing the powder. Three main types of scales exist:

1. Digital Scales (usual scale with a digital readout)

2. Balance Beam Scales (manual method and usually the most accurate)

3. Digital Powder Systems (This system is pre-programmed for charge weight and will dispense the required amount of powder and weigh it at the same time)

Powder Dribbler / Trickler

A powder dribbler is not nescessary in the reloading process however it does make the process much easier, faster, and more accurate.

A sample description of a powder trickler is shown below:

'The Hornady Powder Trickler is ideal for getting your loads exactly the same every time, for increase accuracy. You can easily drop that last few tenths of a grain of powder into a dropped charge for the ultimate uniformity in your powder charges.'

Kinetic Hammer

A kinetic/inertia hammer becomes nescessary if a mistake has been made with either the primer seating, powder charge, or bullet seating process and you are required to dismantle the loaded round. A description from the Lyman Magnum Inertia Hammer can be found below:

'The Lyman Magnum Impact Bullet Puller is designed to safely disassemble a loaded round in seconds with out damage to the bullet or brass case. Just smack the head on a hard surface until the bullet comes apart from the brass. The head design has been newly engineered to allow the puller to be used on a full range of calibres from the small 5.7x28mm FN to the largest magnum case. The "full size" ergonomic molded handle with rubber insert will provide a comfortable secure grip so the tool wont slip while being used.

Technical Information

Type: Inertia Impact Bullet Puller
Function: Separate bullet and powder from a loaded round
Material: Aluminium shaft, Shatter proof plastic head
Notes:

  • Works great with cast bullets
  • Works on small calibres like the 5.7x28mm FN to the largest magnum case'

Loading Tray / Block

A loading block is used to sit the brass cases in whilst loading. This makes the process easier and less fiddly when it comes to charging the case with powder and preparing to seat the bullet. The case loading block stops accidental spills from occuring. Most loading blocks hold 50 rounds and the only noticable difference is the calibre that they are capable of holding. A description of the Lyman loading block can be found below:

'The Lyman Universal Reloading Tray is an essential accessory for organization and speed during the reloading process. This twin loading block holds 50 rifle or pistol cases for organized reloading sequence.

Technical Information

Material: Heavy duty plastic
Notes: Double-sided
Fits: 22 ACP through 45 Calibre'

Reloading Manual

A loading manual must be carefully selected based on the calibre and the powder that you require to use.

Dies snap easily in and out of the jaws so you can change dies in a couple of seconds. We really like the primer recovery system on the Co-Ax. Spent primers pass straight down into a cup — no more primers carbon the carpet.

Floating jaw shell-holder design delivers low run-out forster co-ax single stage press kit. Smooth stroke without wobble. Best spent-primer collection system. Clearance can be an issue with some very tall dies but you can mill the yoke to accommodate.

Dies must be equipped with cross-bolt style lock rings. We recommend the Hornady lock-rings. If you need power for case sizing, the Co-Ax delivers three times the mechanical advantage of some conventional presses.

With a center-mounted forster co-ax single stage press kit, the Co-Ax works equally well for both right- and left-handed reloaders. Forster co-ax single stage press kit will need to use cross-bolt-style lock-rings on your dies.

We recommend the Hornady rings. These are steel and have a hex-head cross-bolt. The Co-Ax requires no expensive shell-holders. It is simple to install on the existing Co-Ax yoke. I load competition rounds [High power]. The Co-Ax is the only one I trust. Universal shell holder jaws work like a charm. Primer catcher is a plus. Do your self a favor put out the money for a CO-AX first, you will not be disapointed.

I just resized I have had the problem with Hornady seating die stems not clearing the yoke. I just cut the stem off. It is too long to begin with. As others have said, you must use the style of lock ring with this press. The Forster cross bolt lock ring costs too much, is made of aluminum and uses an archaic slotted screw.

Use the Hornady Sure-loc lock ring. It costs less, is made of steel and uses a socket head screw. Co-AxForsterPressReloading. Please Consider Making a Donation:
